@ottocrat I disagree here, it is a fair statement actually. The booster had never flown before, and it successfully lifted the craft to 40 km altitude. This was followed by a failure with the stage separation resulting in a spin and the subsequently a commanded destruction.

So unproven hardware was verified to fly, even with some engines non-functional. It was also the first flight ever of a multi-stage methane rocket.

Elon should go back and focus on rocketry, something that he has done well with so far, unlike his clusterfsck he created with the bird site.

Elon's success with SpaceX is due to the fact that in order to work with NASA, ESA, and any number of private aerospace firms, he has to delegate to absolutely competent people and *never* depart from documented processes. Any capriciousness at all and his contracts vanish.

He is under no such constraint with Twitter and Tesla, which is why he's a blundering bull in a china shop with them.
