I’ve enjoyed watching my British-Australian wife get to know southern Germany for the first time. She’s bowled over by the civic amenities and the quality of life. We spent our last afternoon in a typical community Freibad (open air swimming complex), entry to this superb facility was a pittance and we were almost alone on a sunny Saturday in August.

I think many British people have simply no notion of how much better the basics are in other European countries. But I also think many German people have no notion of how well they live compared to some others. They take a lot for granted, and grumble constantly about everything.

@ottocrat Be fair, they surely get tired of eating nothing but bratwurst and sauerkraut, and lederhosen tends to ride up and chafe.
