"How Universities Lost the Internet"

or has someone done research on this topic? That is, the fact that on many North American universities have ceded all technical capacity to Microsoft, Google, etc?

It used to be students could get web hosting, email, and even some cool experimental online stuff through their schools. Now every online communication channel is locked down.

@rwg Most German universities I was at seem to still do their own hosting, mail and offer webspace.

@simulo @rwg I've recently -- on a small personal scale -- taken back my online presence and moved my web and email servers onto devices that I control. One thing I became instantly aware of is what a shitstorm the internet is now. The moment it came up the attacks began, in immense volume. My firewall's blackhole list already covers about 1/8th of the entire IPv4 address space. Perhaps universities just don't want or cant staff the exposure to risk and are happy to outsource to people who are paid to do that sort of thing.
