I recently returned from a trip to Auckland, New Zealand, to visit my wife's younger son. While driving from the airport, while speaking to his girlfriend in the front seat, he referred to the three of us sitting in the back seat as "three Americans."
I smiled and waited for my wife or daughter to object, but they didn't. Conversation continued, and finally I said that I was still stuck about fifteen minutes before, when he referred to his mother and sister, both born and raised in Hong Kong, as "Americans." They both said they noticed, but since they're permanent residents now, it seemed fair. They both first set foot in the USA in 2019, but now they're Americans.
Sometimes I love the USA.
