Two news headlines over the US holiday weekend have struck a nerve. 1) FCC bans Huawei, ZTE equipment axios.com/2022/11/25/fcc-bans- and 2) Germany declares war on Microsoft 365 via GDPR twitter.com/WolfieChristl/stat

I'm sympathetic to both of these. I believe in the principles of the GDPR, and I trust Chair Rosenworcel has good reason for her actions. I'm not saying they're wrong.

But wow, it feels like two big blows to the global internet from countries that lead in promoting openness and freedom online.

My understanding is that lots of rural cell systems depend on Chinese equipment. This will work to keep telecom in rural USA worse than in many developing countries. I think this hurts USA population on the whole.

Not certain that this protectionism will even help US companies compete in a sector they have largely abandoned.
