Language help please? There are models that help us think about a problem space and there are models that help us categorize specific instances that we've found.

For example, the periodic table lets us categorize atoms based on the atomic number. Other models, like STRIDE or the Apgar # help us evaluate something. Is there a name for these types of models?

Taxonomy:

Like "phylum, genus, ... species" or other ways of systematically organizing knowledge.

@rrb Thanks - decision tree is really useful in context.

@adamshostack

Lots of literature on optimizing decision tree structure to minimize the number of decisions needed for a given class of data.

@rrb Thanks - in this case, the words are needed to express "this model is not intended to be a decision tree" so I can wash my hands of some convoluted but largely irrelevant logic problems in a model that has separate "perceived susceptibility" "perceived severity" and "threat" (with threat having other inputs)

The model isn't intended to categorize inputs or include a decision tree, but help us think about the problem. So I don't need to put a statement in a specific box.
