News on potential collapse of Twitter
Until now I hadn’t appreciated that were very serious structural problems at Twitter. I thought Elon would make it messy, but it would robustly continue. This below, however, is starting to make me much more concerned.
I came across to Mastodon out of curiosity, fun, sense of opportunity & respect for the concept. Now I’m thinking it’s a vital hedge for us all against serious Twitter risks, including collapse.
@mikegalsworthy feels over simplistic. Good security people are not good because they are there for every threat as it happens. The work is done in advance, in depth and throughout the organisation. It's concerning for the mid to long term that people with experience of dealing with the unique demands of securing Twitter have moved away.
@anotheruniqueid @mikegalsworthy certainly some truth to that but more of the burden sits in the hands of SOCs than you might expect. They are also notoriously understaffed. If the layoffs hit them even a quarter as hard as the rest of the workforce.. it's not going to be good.
@shadowsonawall @mikegalsworthy good points. If an already understaffed function loses the expertise it's definitely more concerning. Certainly not the ideal for a major global brand that will be a major target. I think the testimony to the people leaving is that we usually don't have to worry so much about Twitter data security. It's actually one of my concerns about Mastodon is that we've suddenly got quite a few new server admins who've taken up the batten at a key moment.
@anotheruniqueid @mikegalsworthy twitter is/was so bad at data security/privacy that the federal government had to step in and slap them around to the tune of.. 5 billion, I believe?
I agree that mastadon servers in general are more vulnerable. There will be multiple attacks, supply chain, protocol exploits, etc that cut the network to ribbons if the overall userbase grows enough to warrant the attention. If you've got a password unique to mastadon though, you don't have much to worry about except someone impersonating you - nobody's collecting ridiculously invasive details about your interests/activities here 
@shadowsonawall @mikegalsworthy True, I think I must have missed something really big regarding Twitter data compliance as only saw the talk of this recently. I understand this was about their inappropriate use of data rather than data security risk, but I should get more aware on this.
On Mastodon security, I think a calculated risk at the moment, but it's difficult to assess the likelihood. With separate instances, the risk is at least bounded.
