"mastodon is too complicated!" i have just spent almost half an hour fighting with tumblr just to figure out how to change my blog layout

and I don't mean "playing around with my layout to get it just right" i mean "trying to find the button that lets me change the fucking thing"

and, like, I do not mean to be snarky towards people who *do* find mastodon complicated or hard to get used to

everyone finds different things difficult & I do get that

for me tumblr is incredibly unintuitive, but i'm sure there are people who are like "huh? tumblr is super easy"

but yeah I have seen a few tech people claiming that fedi is doomed as a social network because the ~regular~, everyday, non-techy people will NEVER be able to figure out how to use mastodon, and that has been feeling a little bit weird and patronising to me, a non-tech-y person

and also just kind of funny because I have never heard that said about tumblr, and yet, tumblr currently has me wanting to throw my laptop at the wall

I think the biggest hurdle for me personally when I signed up was the whole "how can I choose an instance when I can't see the local timeline to get a feel for it, until AFTER i sign up to the instance"

which feels like... I do think it's an issue but it's not a software-too-complex issue

@natrix It truly doesn't matter. I've been on Mastodon for four years. I'm on a well-run, high-performance instance with 25,000 users. And in all that time, the only person from my own instance I've ever interacted with is the admin. I don't know a single person on this instance and it doesn't matter whatsoever.

Does that clear it up a bit more, I hope?
