TIP OF THE DAY

Use and Follow #hashtags !!!

Mastodon has no ads, 500 chars, 5 pins, and edits, but the best thing is NO ALGORITHM. On the birdsite you are force-fed by an algorithm. A mishmash of your history, likes, follows and whatever Twitter wants to cram into you. With NO ALGORITHM, you are in control. Your feeds are just who and what you follow, and you can follow #hashtags .

Include #hashtags liberally so others can follow your ideas.

@shuttersparks That's true. There are some instances that allow longer posts and you may want to consider that when selecting an instance. Some users do not favor longer posts, and may not read them, or may block them. Most instances limit posts to 500 characters however, and threading is a way to link posts together to create longer discussions on a topic. One key thing with threading is to make the second and subsequent posts in the thread unlisted.

@mastodonmigration @shuttersparks Will the longer posts show up on instances that keep the 500 post limit?

@cenobyte @shuttersparks Yes. It may be possible for instances to block longer posts, but that does not seem to generally be done. You will notice frequent 500 to 1000 character posts. The 2000 character posts get kind of long...

@mastodonmigration @shuttersparks For sure, and I won't be blocking longer posts. Was just wondering if they'd show up here. Thanks!

Yes, it does render even if the post is past 500 characters. Keep in mind that the fediverse is much bigger than just Mastodon. You have blogs that you can follow that are on the Fediverse, like those written on WriteFreely or WordPress with the ActivityPub add-on.

Personally, I run an Akkoma instance, by default the character limit on Akkoma is 5k. I never hit 5k but I can easily blow past 500 & people on instances w/ only a 500 character limit can still see my posts.

@cenobyte @mastodonmigration As far as I know, yes. The vast majority of my posts are "tweet sized". But a reasoned complete answer to a political or technical question can easily blow past 500 chars.

I moved off the instance I was on for years mainly because of the 500 char limit plus other reasons. I switched to an instance with a 65k limit, well beyond anything I'd post here, but it's nice to have.
