I once guest-taught a freshman composition class for a friend and the devil got into me and I told the students the reason they struggled with writing good essays was that there is no such thing as a good essay, "All essays are bad." I spent about thirty minutes explaining this and their eyes filled with holy light as if they'd seen the world stripped bare.

@sannewman You may have done them a great favor. A lot of difficulty with writing that I see stems from stress and worry about their writing. You took a big step towards freeing them of that.
