Pointing out typos and other errors (in a non-trolling manner, I mean) became Not A Thing on Twitter for a lot of reasons, but one was the reality that the only way to correct a mistake was to delete and tweet again. Mastodon makes it possible to edit corrections, and some people might actually appreciate the opportunity to fix mistakes. I wonder if that will lead to a different norm over time.

@Meyerweb Before you get too excited, edits are only visible on your instance. They don't propagate to other instances. I've never seen it work any other way and I recently did some tests to confirm. So I don't use the edit function because it could result in some very confusing threads.

@shuttersparks I've certainly seen edited toots from other instances, and I've received notifications (from other servers) when a post I liked/boosted is later edited.

I'm sure there is some caching delay, and maybe there were issues early on with incomplete support, but most servers do now seem to propagate edits to posts.

@AmeliaBR @Meyerweb That would be great. Just two weeks ago I did an experiment with a friend. He created a post, and waited for everyone to see it. Then he made an edit to the post and let everyone know what the change was. Even after days none of us saw any change to the original post.

At best, it appears that edit functionality is spotty. Until that improves I'd consider it a dangerous function to use.
