My laptop got stolen today. I’ve been tracking the thief for hours.

Police say it’s a lost cause—so I wiped the data remotely. And I’ve already replaced it.

That’s $2,000 down the drain 🤬

@atomicpoet So you have the location of your stolen goods, but what? Police can't be bothered to solve crimes anymore?

@mike Apparently, they can’t bust into someone’s house without do cause. Location data is not good enough 😠

@atomicpoet This makes me wonder: since you are able to track the device and wipe it remotely: would it be technically possible to remotely trigger battery overheating and burning down their house? Would this just need special firmware, or is this impossible because hardware would prevent it?

@daniel @atomicpoet The battery has safeties that would prevent this unless you made significant modifications to the battery itself.

Also, tantalizing as it is, booby-trapping is illegal. If the thief suffers harm that can be traced to you, he'll sue for big money and win.

@shuttersparks @atomicpoet maybe, but if I was a thief, I'd prefer not to be harmed, so I would want to know, if my loot might harm me.
