The fight for the survival of AM radio is playing out not only on Capitol Hill but across America. I went deep in the heart of #Texas to give a listen. Here's my VOA News reporting: voanews.com/a/am-radio-fights-

@w7voa Not that my opinion matters, but AM radio in cars should absolutely be retained. The electronics to do it is trivial. In fact the function is surely built into the radio's chip already and costs nothing.

In cars is exactly where you want AM radio. It's wonderful when driving long distances to entertain yourself with it, especially at night when faraway stations are easy to pick up.

If I found myself owning a car without it, I'd install a separate radio with AM.

@w7voa @shuttersparks to me the value is less in entertainment and rather in having a redundant way to convey emergency service. It is as silly as US ISPs currently trying to kill 2G and 3G relays when at least one of them should definitely be kept for emergency calls/warning purpose.

@ppn @w7voa That is absolutely a value. People don't think about it in the USA but they will if a major emergency hits. That's when the clear channel stations like KSL, KFI, and KNX will return to the limelight they had long ago. After nightfall, people hungry for news will sit around their AM radio. Hopefully, such a situation will never happen but it could.

@shuttersparks @ppn @w7voa

In rural places w/ crap cell service, even as the shadow of its former self, replete w/ Christian Nationalist owners like Salem running things, AM radio is vital.

@Eohippa @ppn @w7voa Yes, there's a small station here that a lot of people listen to. At night they dial back to 5 watts.
