I've found something else I'm no good at photographing: the moon.

The 1st image shows some details of the moon. Everything else is underexposed and utterly dark.

The 2nd image shows improved exposure around the moon, with some surrounding detail. But the moon is so overexposed, it looks like the sun.

How do you get the best of both worlds without combining images, or manipulating things with an editor?

@DaveMasonDotMe Saw your lament and have the solution. I wrote up a little blurb on lunar photography long ago. It's actually straightforward to get the highest resolution from whatever optics you're using, whether cheap camera, fancy camera, or telescope. I also mention the usual pitfalls. Hope it helps: shuttersparks.net/shooting-moo
