“Sharing the skies”

Why don’t birds just “share the friendly skies” with those friendly wind farms.

“Wind turbines are friendlier to birds than oil-and-gas drilling”

This knife which stabbed you is “friendlier” than that gun which otherwise would have shot you. Thus, this knife is peaceful.

Oh, wait, didn’t the oil and gas industry grow last year? So, wind turbines are killing hundreds of thousands of birds and bats every year, and oil and gas killing much more.

Worldwide, 49 percent of all wild bird species are in steep decline. BirdLife International’s authoritative report, State of the World’s Birds 2022, estimates that there are now nearly three billion fewer wild birds in Canada and the U.S. than a few decades ago, and about 600 million fewer in the European Union.

@gerrymcgovern In the U.S. the biggest threat is domestic cats. They kill billions of birds every year. I keep my cats indoors. I wish other people would.

It is a bit of a difficult debate. Yes in Germany cats also kill by far the most birds but agriculture with massive pesticide use keeps insect populations small and with that reduces food supplies for many birds species and hence while not actively killing (some get killed during e.g. harvest) reduce the amount of birds that can be supported by the system.

Modern living is killing the birds and billions of other creatures. Now, we just add wind turbines. It's just one more executioner who has entered the field to do the killing for us, so we can leave the TV on 24/7, or whatever.
