My hope for 2023 is that this will be the year when people start following the advice of the National Institute of Standards and Technology that:

"12 a.m. and 12 p.m. are ambiguous and should not be used"

Everytime you break this rule, a kitten cries.

@Robminchin Confusing, yes. Ambiguous, no. 12:00 p.m. is noon and 12:00 a.m. is midnight.

@spradlig @Robminchin NIST’s argument, though, is that noon itself is by definition neither 12:00 PM nor 12:00 AM (and midnight itself is by definition both 12:00 PM and 12:00 AM), it’s just noon

@bhtooefr @Robminchin Google gives me several good sources stating that by convention, noon is p.m. and midnight is a.m. e.g. greenwichmeantime.com/articles .

I always use “noon” or “midnight” if there’s a chance of confusion.
