@yogthos@mastodon.social @clacke You think we're worse for having a say in how our countries are governed? Why?

@swiley @yogthos The people are voting wrong!

I'm half kidding, half serious. The rise of the alt-right shows that we as a people don't quite know what we're doing.

@clacke @yogthos@mastodon.social The alt right predates the internet.

@swiley @yogthos The "alt-right" term very much doesn't predate the internet, it was coined in 2008.

Neofascism is older than the widespread use of the internet of course, Europe had a fascist wave in the 80s and 90s, but it had largely subsided by the turn of the century.

The current fascist wave has been growing in the last decade and it is no coincidence that it has been growing along with the shifting media landscape. Global propaganda has never been easier.

@clacke @yogthos@mastodon.social Yeah, these ideas and revolutions to implement them are much older though. This stuff happened in the mid 20th century when there was no internet and barely TV.

@swiley @yogthos All I said was that specifically the alt-right expression of it is driven by the rise of centralized internet services. I'm not in any way denying that the US propped up fascist states or that Europe had neofascists in the 20th century.
