In pharma, I guess the goal of a researcher is not to see the ideas through to application, but just stop at "promising" and hope it will get picked up elsewhere.
@jacobsimmering Good point. And to make it even stronger, I read that when business types classify expenditure as R&D the "R" doesn't mean Research the way that scientists mean R. There may be no invention in R, just building infrastructure and other stuff. So, even worse than what you say.

Research stops at "and then follows usefulness."
Development then takes over.
R: Invents new compounds of potential therapeutic value.
D: Makes that compound useful and marketable.
R&D != R and != D.
(This model is generally applicable).
