Have been trying unsuccessfully to do a sort of attention-hijack-reset by turning off notifications (and I already don’t use phone apps for most things, using the webapps instead) and more importantly, setting aggressive ScreenTime rules (like, 1 min/day of Reddit, YouTube, Instagram, etc — basically locks as soon as I try to use them.) But still haven’t fully broken the cycle of waking up, checking everything, even for the brief minute it lets me look. (Or letting myself hit “ignore”.)

I don’t think I want to be as drastic as to switch to a basic, non-smartphone, because there’s a lot of apps on iOS I do get benefit out of or need to look at. But definitely need to make this better. Waking up and impulsively “checking” everything is a poor start to the day, in retrospect.

@mathiasx sorry, isn't this "just" about making up your mind? Or "just" finding something worth immersing yourselves in first up in the morning?

I, without planning, get immersed in something the odd morning and stumble across notifications on the device after breakfast! I too use websites for services rather than apps almost exclusively.

@tetrislife perhaps. Mindset and habit are the main things at play here, but software guardrails are helping to change habit.
