@Jonathanglick I didn't get the "mental leap to think of atoms". What could the Industrial-age scientist have had on Greek tradition thinkers, that make their taking such a "mental leap" credible but not traditional thinkers'? As I understand, Europe well before the Dark ages was quite bright! Conditions for thinkers might have been better than in the Industrial age.
