PHP is actually really great when used how it was originally intended: for mostly static HTML with some dynamically generated portions added; primarily as a replacement for where one might otherwise use a traditional CGI program.

It gets a lot of hate for the same reason as shell does I guess: people insist on using it wayyyyyy outside of its niche, but within that niche it excels at it and it doesn't get enough recognition for that.

@nytpu this should not be an argument for PHP, it should be an argument for bringing back traditional CGI or some kind of modern equivalent

@atax1a But the whole (original) point of PHP is that it's basically just HTML with some server-side logic thrown in. With normal CGI you have to deal with templating engine nonsense and dealing with writing your own routes and dealing with literally everything related to the request other than the initial parsing that the server does; while with PHP the server deals with everything like normal so it's basically equivalent to static site hosting.

PHP is 1.5 million lines of mostly C/C++ ... for just this - write web backends in a C-level language. I know Rasmus Lerdof has said that was the intent too, but that is no excuse for continuing like that.
