What's so great about having a job writing open-source software is that your work isn't just for the profit of a single corporation. Instead, many corporations get to profit off your work.

@seth my main source of satisfaction is the *non*-Corporations - i.e. individuals and communities - who benefit from my #FOSS work...

@oblomov @seth heh. I didn't laugh, because you're sort of right. #FOSS sits uncomfortably in a capitalism system. The implication of your post is that it's bad to work for the benefit of other corporations. In the sense that corporations are an inherently negative artefact of capitalism (explanation: davelane.nz/megacorps) anything that benefits corporations is undesirable, yes, but otherwise the whole point of #FOSS is that it's about sharing digital abundance not artificial scarcity.

I think I am not nitpicking when I say that @seth said OSS and not FOSS
@oblomov

@lightweight @tetrislife There are even FOSS projects that are too complex to be used effectively by individuals, and are largely only beneficial to companies or corporations who can pay for the cost of operating the software. Anyway, my snarky post was mostly about my own job and not a condemnation of OSS as a whole.
