A HUGE problem in the US (and elsewhere) is that we don't come to consensus about goals before we act, so government action is often really messed up, untargeted, inefficient, corrupt, etc.
This shows up very clearly when it comes to judicial stuff at all levels.
We don't come to consensus on whether the goal is deterrence, restitution, reformation, or outright punishment, so for generations we've been putting so many people in all sorts of counterproductive situations, generally completely unintentionally.
In this particular topic a significant proportion of the population outright DOES believe cruelty is the goal with an eye for an eye mindset. If that's what we really want to do, well, yay democracy. But we never actually have that discussion, so the goal isn't decided upon, so we're stuck in limbo, unable to fix these systems.
We need to have that debate and settle it honestly. We need to halt all action on it until we do.
Oh I hear them talking about it pretty much every single day on mainstream conservative media outlets!
And that's not to mention social media places like Nextdoor.
It really is pretty mainstream, sadly in my opinion.
The reason behind it goes into some psychoanalysis though.
@volkris @blogdiva
The people who like the violence and punishment refuse to discuss it because right now, they have what they want and they fear losing it.
