If the #nuclear industry retail thinks it can be part of the #greentransition, then the Guardian's ongoing revelations about #Sellafield suggest they need to put their house in order.
Of course, for many this will merely confirm exactly why Nuclear cannot be regarded as a safe component of any #greenenergy strategy.... you don't get these sort of problems with #wind & #solar (which is not to say they have no problems of their own, but they're less critical).

@ChrisMayLA6 I could get behind nuclear energy if the industry had established geological and engineering solutions for waste disposal that were politically acceptable to the local population. However, in the UK we have had 60 years of nuclear energy and not one gram of high level waste has been legally/safely disposed of.
Until the nuclear industry has an acceptable waste disposal plan, it can get in the sea (not literally).
@geomannie @ChrisMayLA6 Pfft, there's no need for nuke. If we pushed renewables through properly, nuke would become a side-issue from the past. We don't even use the heat produced by servers to power electricity

@lopta @geomannie @sinabhfuil @ChrisMayLA6 Remember that the fossil fuels industry is the wealthiest industry in human history, and spends billions in suppressing tech like sodium ion batteries, let alone #TMSR tech since Nixon quashed it in the 70's in favor of fossil-fuels-rich Cold War buildout. The top 1% have even spent billions keeping India's 3 Stage project mired in construction extortion tactics, virtually eliminating the transition from breeder/feeder reactors to Thorium. Most of the dry cask light water waste sitting next to reactors should be already in the recycling process by now. Meanwhile, the COP28 president has signed an oil contract with BRICS and Putin. Pathetically sad.

@worldsendless @NuModular @geomannie @sinabhfuil @ChrisMayLA6 Thorium molten salt reactor, if I remember correctly. They've been built experimentally and promise some safety benefits. I think they're also one of the types that can burn mix oxide fuel, putting some otherwise problematic spent fuel to good use.
