We have the same problem here in the UK, kids carry knives, or some do, for protection.

There is a perceived threat which becomes a real threat when people carry a knife as others then also start doing the same.

I wouldnt say carrying a knife is a real threat myself. It only becomes a threat if you use it as such. simply carrying it, not so much.

But some people then see the knife and they use theirs first, or feel so scared they just use it anyway.

then the issue isnt that they carry knives, its that they are quick to use knives or brandish them, different problem.

Even in america if you carry a weapon you must hide it, you cant walk around with it showing or pointing it at people without good cause.
