I think they could be finished,, given they are now under investivgation over Myanmar everyone is looking closely at them.
I need to read the article on that it is linked here somehwhere so trying to find it.
@aral @zleap @metagrrrl the number one unsustainable thing about these big networks is, they need money and advertisers and thus people, but effective moderation will never scale affordably.
So, just call them on their bluff and demand or enforce effective, fair, moral moderation, make them responsible for the content on their system. Not a huge deal for Mastodon hosts, the volume is low. Deal breaker for giant centralized socials.
+1 maybe we need different approaches, Schools in the UK are "Committed to promoting the safeguarding the welfare of children and young people" it is a statutory duty and YET they use facebook
Per haps we shouk be asking how this is the case given the recent evidence that facebook put profit before child welfare.
Force people to under take ethical and moral sole searching, make them feel hey are part of the problem being on there rather than the solution which is supporting federation.
@zleap @wilbr @metagrrrl I agree but it’s hard. The people who should be protecting others are actively courted by Big Tech. I’ve encountered roadblocks in the past on exactly this topic. Read and weep: https://ar.al/notes/europe-we-need-to-talk-about-institutional-corruption/
I get told kid young people don't care about privacy perhaps those saying that have been brainwashed or have not asked the right questions
And schools being banned from using anti capitalist material
@aral @metagrrrl
Is there a way to include a librepay or other donation system on every instance so users can contribute, even if this was a small amount it would help maintain individual instances.
@zleap @aral @metagrrrl I’ve seen people put that in about page or blog. You can also make an instance admin account that asks for donation every once in a while.
I think it would be a good idea. Or perhaps raise funds for a specific purpose that users can see happen.
@zleap @aral @metagrrrl I’m not familiar with the platform, but I think opencollective is an alternative that helps you be open on spending.
@zleap @aral @metagrrrl you can also publish that on blog posts or social posts about that. Examples OTOH are fosstodon.org and sourcehut.org: they report how much they gained from donation/payment and how they spent that.
The writeAs instance i am using isn't working at the moment

bad gateway error , any help appreciated
Yes we need to be open and transparent too,l set the right example
@aral @metagrrrl the problem seems to be that people want that kind of centralised service. at this point, it's not that they aren't aware of the alternatives - they're just not choosing them because facebook is (a) where everybody else is, (b) a closed shop
so B looks like the eaiest attack vector tbh - technically, politically, and in terms of succeeding (qv the EU mandating a common charger port)
hell, at this point, interoperability should be a basic requirement of online services anyway. it's the only way to prevent a de facto monopoly like Facebook or Twitter or Google - or Microsoft, for that matter - arising again
of course small tech, being inherently based on open, easy to implement protocols, has an inherent advantage here ;-)
@aral @zleap @metagrrrl If you let the advertising industry lobby for weak privacy laws, they will make sure you can not outlaw their business. In fact you had US corporations writing EU privacy laws..
@zleap @metagrrrl Yay and all that but, ultimately, venture-capital-funded Arsebook is waiting in the aisles to take their place. Unless we change the system (outlaw the business model or make it financially unsustainable) and provide ethical Small Tech alternatives, we’ll just be replacing one people farmer with another.
