Republican Sen. Josh Hawley is calling for a TikTok ban.
This is a day after another Republican, Sen. Marco Rubio, published an OpEd in Fox News also pushing for a ban.
To be sure, these Republicans care very little about TikTok's surveillance of users.
Their problem is that, unlike Meta or Twitter, TikTok is not an American company.
Nevertheless, I personally think surveillance capitalism should be banned wholesale on all social networks.
I think we need to be careful, otherwise we could face a huge influx to platforms like peertune for video sharing which could have the same effect as we had when thousands of joined here from Twotter/ as in serious overload and more work for admins.
I can write a post here with a few characters, video uses a lot more bandwidth.
Looking at the 'many tranches of the fediverse' graphic there is :-
Peertune
Owncast
Pixelfed (which is pictures anyway)
castopod
and maybe toa point nextcloud
Which of those provide a similar service to tik tok?
The fact kids are addicted to socal media, in this way shows a deeper problem with society, but yes this is partly caused by big tech and algorithms, but also the fact adults are just as guilty of being glued to their phones.
Sounds good , not heard of that one/
@zleap I'm fully aware of problems regarding audio & video infrastructure on the Fediverse.
This is why I continue to build #GreatApe.
