I did my GCSE exams back in 1991, back then I think hand written essays were normal, we could type essays as long as we also submitted handwritten essays at the same time. I think the idea was that it provided evidence that it was truly your own work.

For the sake of those people who actually do the work for these exams in 2023, something HAS to be in place otherwise it simply devalues all the hardwork you put in. People who are academically inclide will write, those who struggle but want to do well will write, the lazy will use some other form of tech to in effect cheat, Why should the former two lose out to cheats and liars.
