In which a bunch of middle-aged, white men guess what is wrong with teen girls, picking their favorite technology moral panics:
American Teens Are Really Miserable. Why? nytimes.com/2023/02/18/opinion

@jeffjarvis

I was not aware of anything being wrong with "teen girls" ?

Teen pregnancy is down.
Eating disorders are more rare.

I do think the "touch grass" concerns about too much time online have some merit. But before that we just watched TV almost as much.

Most people can recognize that more people seeking help for things like depression isn't the same as more people getting depressed.

@futurebird @jeffjarvis

There was a survey reporting high levels of depression in teen girls recently.

Of course, there are also recent surveys showing high levels of anxiety and depression in other demographics, too. So we need to be careful that the data is being correctly compared -- i.e. do teen girls have *particularly* high levels of MH issues now, or just *along with everyone else*?

But one does not have to look far to find news for teen girls in particular to be depressed about.

I agree we need more data, but there are a good number of studies already done we have the data but these experts don't seem to be able to come up with a solution.

Perhaps the best solution to a lot of problems would be to take a smart phone, place on a concrete block, place a chisel on the screen and hit that hard with a hammer, this of course would destroy the phone, then buy a simple call / text phone and take a step backwards sure, but it would avoid all the problems we have with scrolling through websites, and being sent material that some algoritim has decided you want.

No, but just trying to make a point that if a lot of issues are due to the fact with these smartphones kids are constantly sent messages, bullying carries on 24/7.

We need better mobile technology designed for a purpose without big tech being involved

even the head of Samsung said giving a phone to a child <11 is a bad idea.

I would rather a child did that to their phone than taking their own life due to the MH issues caused by it.
