Just saw sifive announced the brand new P550 boards, which finally have a CPU with the first true RISC-V Vector extension, the P670. Ever since the CPU was announced in November, the anticipation for a board has been growing. Available this summer for quite a price, but it's got 2 PCIE slots, and 16GiB of RAM.

Wait, hold on, I've just been informed they're NOT using the P670, instead they're opting to use their P550 CPUs. Which are TWO YEARS OLD by now, have NO vector extensions, and I doubt they even have the full bitmap extension.

Good game. DEAD ISA.
Two year old chips. Unbelievable. They could've been swimming in cocaine if they used their new CPUs, but I guess we'll have to wait for two more full years to have a RISC-V CPU with vector extensions.

Only we don't, because YOU CAN'T STOP CHINA!
XuanTie announced their C908 in December, the follow-up to their C906, which 2.5 years ago shocked the world with the first RISC-V Vector implementation, which was still a draft spec, and sold it cheap enough to buy 16 dollar boards with the CPU!
And unlike certain Intel-funded yuppies, they're actually producing their CPUs right now. Canaan announced their Kendryte K230 development board practically the day C908 was announced, they're mass-producing their boards so there's supply, and are going to release them within probably a month or two. And they're fully open-source hardware too, and they'll have RISC-V-V, and they'll be affordable!

I feel that open hardware is the only way those of us who want to run fully free software systems is to use tech such as this, it would be great to just move away from hardware that is in effect designed for windows, and has the firmware designed for windows too,k e.g that ufei boot thing,

I should not need some encryption key from microsoft to sign anything. ( granted I don't really understnad this UFEI thing at all)

So RISCV + LibreBoot + open wifi & other firmware are now essential, maybe boards with good amount of RAM say 8-16gb, with cases etc so we can have options for both desktop and laptops (and maybe tablets).
