If the desperate shortage of cyber security talent gets any worse, we may yet find jobs for all the qualified people who can’t get hired

@jerry

There does not seem to be much in the way of movement to train or recruit people.

Local company to me teach 'digital skills' this seems to include photography, media, game design etc. Not seen anything regarding AI, cybersecurity, coding, or putting people in to enginnering so we can i dunno build infrastructure to take wind / solar farms and connect to power grids etc.

At the same time I am running code club, on a volunteer basis so ok just teaching the basics with scratch / python, but there is no reason people can't go furhter, it would be great to do similar sessions for adults on a paid basis, with the view that those who want to go further can be signposted to courses or at least appropriate advice.

Here in Torbay and much wider there seems to be a serious isconnect, confirming what you are saying here, with a serious shortage AND our actual training priorities.

Free code camp just sent out their latest bulletin, first article is looking at using AI fo coding, I have code club later on today, last week I had a brief discussion on this with one of the parents, as he had experimented a little with getting chat gpt to write code. So this article is good timing, so next STEM group meeting could be watching the linked video and having conversations.

I think it is this sort of out of box thinking that is needed.

Hopefully today I will connect with a few more of the home school community , they home school for a reason and are keen to learn.

Sadly I think most are under 16, so there is little chance of them entering the workforce for a few years.

I am sure what is holding all this back is a lack of understanding in the topic area, from the very people who decide on what courses to run, everything here has to be accredited, people have undertaken free code camp courses and obtained good jobs, I am sure a lot of these acreditation people are just box ticking burocrats,

I don't understand cybersecurity or AI BUT I do understand the need for expertise in these areas.

BBC news article today suggests UK teachers want more info / guidence on AI in education. ( I will see if I can post about that later)

I am not sure how we can try and solve the current training situation, not everyone wants to do full time accredited courses, for intro level stuff just make it fun and then take it from there perhaps
My current suitation is that I am looking for more hours, I am currently employed by an agency only there doesn't seem to be much in ther way of Teaching Assistant work in Torbay, there is, |I am just not getting any.

I am also running Code Club and a STEM group on a volunteer basis. I really see a gap in the market to teach basic coding to adults (or parents so they can keep up with the kids) however as there is a shortage ofpeople in certain technical roles, we should be trying to reach out to them.

Talking to some of the parents, it seems some of the computing curriculum teaching is not happening in primary schools, oddly canm use scratch, know some basic python, can do basic electronics, add LEDs to Raspberry Pi, Arduino and have used Micro:bits so running a code club for either kids or adults on a paid basis can't be that difficult.

So happy to try and collaborate with anyone in the for the moment, who works / involved with say , to see if we can find ways to teach people the essential skills. The courses are out there anyway so just a case of putting people in touchj and providing a place for people to study online courses perhaps.

Perhaps get actual hands on experience with the Linux command line or perhaps Kali linux and related tools would be also good. We could do that at Paignton Library, I am sure I don't need to be a teacher for this, more of a facilitator to provide a place for people to study.

We need people with technical skills for future jobs.
