There was a time before social media when people said things because they wanted to say them, not because they wanted 'likes/favorites' for them.

If you've forgotten that and expect everything you say needs a 'like/favorite', you need to re-examine your life.

@tomcrinstam

Agreed, I generally post or reply to something in order to try and add to the conversation. I think those of us here are here to get away from what you describe.

On mainstream social media everyone seems to have something to say on mainstream social media or they want to be 'the person' who posts 'THAT video' of an event as if they feel it is their duty.

Look at what happened yesterday someone crashed in to the dowining street barrier and according to the BBC News, they had people with their mobile phones out to take pictures / video for their social feeds. We don't know the facts yet that person could easily have had a heart attack, or other medical condition that caused them to crash. The last thing they want is to be all over social media.

@zleap Yeah, good theory that its different here, but if you search here you will find many people repeating that same idea.

I see at least one, sometimes more, toot here every day stating that everything needs a reaction. Hell, I blocked someone a couple of weeks back who said that if other people didn't like and reboost their posts, it was a personal insult.

@tomcrinstam

I am sure it becomes apparent, very quickly to people who are looking for a reaction, they are not going to get that here or at least not the sort of reaction they are looking for.

If I find an interesting science story on here, I may repost on my blog, BUT I credit the fediverse as the source of the story post, and then also link to scienceforums for discussion, that is what a forum is for.

So hopefully best of both worlds, somewhere to discuss the topic at hand, while acknowledging I found the story on the fediverse.

However if one wants a reaction, you generally need to ask a specific question about the subject matter.

While boosts are good, a reply and tagging someone in, is also good in some circumstances. I did this earlier, replied and tagged in my instance in.
