This needs to be dealt with so it sends a clear message to the student, but equally sends a clear message the school won't tolerate this.

@zleap @shawnwegner Brentwood is the rural periphery of the Bay Area. There are probably some wingers among the farmers and ranchers.

Yes, but the article seems to imply he 'hacked' if the system was set up to allow students to share their screen content then the school is partly to blame, as stated there should be systems in place to give proper control over that process.

if he circumvented the system, then there are usually school policies around that too. I think in this case, he didn't he was let in due to weak security. Like you leaving your car unlocked and it gets stolen for items inside get stolen.

So the fact he shares racist material could be a safeguarding issue but I am not sure how robust child safeguarding is in the US compared to the UK so can't comment.

@zleap @shawnwegner It seems extremely unlikely that the school district had any policy that ALLOWED students to share their content. I’m a veteran of a Bay Area school district that sent out an electronics policy that was strict and extensive, which we had to agree to and return every year when our kids returned for the new school year. The Brentwood school folks are fools if they didn’t have something similar.

I was just noting that they may have a somewhat tougher (and possibly more hostile) crowd to than my very idealistic and diversity-welcoming district was facing. A lot of US conservatives have fully embraced that “basket of deplorables” label over the last few years, and it has played out in some really ugly and juvenile ways…
