Americans: I use miles and pounds

Europeans: I use kilometres and kilograms

Canadians: [snorting a line of assorted measuring systems] I'm 5'3, I weigh 150lbs, horses weigh 1000kgs, my house is an hour away and I drive 80 km/h to get there, I need a cup of flour and 1L of milk

@VeryBadLlama the British driving test genuinely quizzes you on how many metres it takes to stop at various speeds in mph. 🙃

Indeed,

The stopping distance is <1 mile usually so you need to know how far you will go (stopping distance) hence there is a min distance between cars so if you do slam on breaks there is room to actually stop.

IIRC you still need to allow for road conditions so a dry road = more friction so less stopping distance, wet or icy roads, the stopping distance increases, not that you should be going at 70 on a motorway in torrential rain or snow / ice.
