"With 1.5 billion smart phones sold annually, it’s estimated that nearly as many are deactivated within that same time frame. The end-of-the-line for many of these outmoded smartphones is a junk drawer or a storage box in the garage. But while these devices languish out-of-sight, out-of-mind, their processors could run faultlessly for more than 10 years. That means smartphones are routinely retired after expending just 25% of their functional lifespan."

@gerrymcgovern who puts an old smartphone in a drawer?!

I have an elaborate string of hand-me-downs so the old phone goes to someone who’s old phone goes to someone else and so on and so on.

@shauny @gerrymcgovern

I wonder if we could start something on here with a tag line so people can help others get tech they need.

@zleap @shauny @gerrymcgovern I support non-profit organisations in Scotland who would love to have your old mobile phones! Anything under 8 years old is useful in #DigitalInclusion work to support people in poverty.

Sounds good, I may not have an old phone my current one is very very basic and I can barely cope with that, keys too small.

But perhaps use the hashtag

@zleap you're not alone. I've heard a few people say this. Some phone models are now specifically being made to be simpler with larger keys.

@SiobhanVohn

Yeah, I hardly use it anyway, useful for 2fa stuff I guess.
