NEW: A children's tablet came pre-installed with malware, software with a "extensive system level permissions to download whatever application it wants,” and five-years-old Android.

Was on sale at Amazon and Walmart, they have now taken it down.

The company that makes it, Dragon Touch, is listed on an official Android page as a “certified” device that’s been “tested for security and performance.”

Google is reviewing "whether the manufacturer's device meets the security standards required for Play Protect certification.”

How often are these companies reinspected to ensure they are still fully compliant ?

@zleap @lorenzofb

they need to be *regularly* inspected by regulators with teeth (in a similar way to how UK Trading Standards and Border Force routinely pull back shipments of dangerous electrical goods at Felixstowe)

When I do electricity safety testing I'm encountering fewer dangerous items, but some still do end up arriving via EBay (and to a lesser extent) Amazon, so the pressure needs to be constantly kept up on the companies..
