“I lived through the end of a civil war — I moved back to Sri Lanka in my twenties, just as the ceasefire fell apart. Do you know what it was like for me? Quite normal. I went to work, I went out, I dated. This is what Americans don’t understand. They’re waiting to get personally punched in the face while ash falls from the sky. That’s not how it happens.”

@miramarco people have been crowing about America's demise since it's earliest years. If you want me to believe that 'society has collapsed', then tell me how it happens: get to the details and define, point by point, what people, institutions, and attitudes must change and how, then prove that they have *at scale*. The author vaguely references your "feeling" about the world around you, as if that's sufficient evidence. It's a rhetorical trick. We have been wounded as a nation, but we are learning and building. We're only lost when we give up on the American experiment and share defeatist BS like that article unchallenged.
