Are tiling window managers really that useful if you don't have a large screen? I used Awesome WM for several years but only to save RAM on that 2 GB machine at school, and my only impression is that windows were often squeezed to the size of being unusable. Or perhaps I was using it incorrectly all along?

@niconiconi my screens aren't especially big (1280x1024 and 1920x1080), but I use XMonad. Side-by-side views are what I use most, but I also like the default layout with a big window @ left and the rest vertically, visually stacked @ right. I don't often *use* the stacked windows like that (sometimes, for a terminal window) but often the small section of the window is at least as informative as the window label... I guess the keyboard-centric navigation is the biggest boon though vs floating windows where you almost have to use the mouse for layout.
