Here's a threat to open source I don't hear a lot of people talking about: General computing devices are slowly drifting into irrelevance. Notice how more and more vendors are saying "IOS and Android only and to hell with the rest of you?" - This isn't an accident.

@feoh This is why a cooperative tech smartphone system is so important. Fortunately there has been good progress in the past few years with Phosh and Plasma Mobile. But it's a shame we let Android take the steam out from our efforts for such a long time as Android progressively got more and more user hostile and proprietary.

@feoh Let's learn from this bad experience with Android to be very skeptical when capitalists use FOSS for innovative technology, especially if they're building their own software ecosystem (ahem Snap).

@be I have very mixed feelings about that stance. On the one hand, I can appreciate where you're coming from. On the other, I think there's a risk of unnecessariliy punishing those who want to innovate *on top of* open source platforms, and I'm concerned that may be a mistake, because more FLOSS in more hands and on more machines is better for everyone. What am I missing?

@be @feoh funny. I had no idea purism was trying for "convergence". They're all *secure your digital life* which, outside of techies, hackers, journalists, and certain marginalized or oppressed people, most aren't going to reach for. If they really made it so people could seamlessly move their work between devices, and got all of the kinks out of that, they'd have general consumer appeal. (The better to fund their social purpose or whatever.)
