@chrisamaphone haven't read the article yet...but my first thought is "CS didn't teach you that". I learned most of my CS lessons from books.

@chrisamaphone read the article. I guess it's just Ko's section of the world during that time. I didn't spend much time in CS academia professionally after undergrad, so maybe there's something there I missed.
