@George_Kimberly @darius Eliza was an early attempt at natural language processing, and one of the earliest chat bots.

If I remember correctely, a lot of people treated it like a therapist, or a confident.

I feel like @adventofcomputing did an episode on it, and I feel like it was really good (it always is), but I can't seem to find it atm.

@gordoooo_z @George_Kimberly @darius I don't think I've covered Eliza itself. I talked about animal game in one of my virus episodes, and I think I mentioned Eliza in that discussion.

"ELIZA captivated users even though it could only repeat a few stock phrases, leading to what researchers call the “ELIZA effect” — or the tendency to anthropomorphize machines that mimic human behavior. ELIZA designer Joseph Weizenbaum observed: “What I had not realized is that extremely short exposures to a relatively simple computer program could induce powerful delusional thinking in quite normal people.”"

@bornach
I remember hearing about Weizenbaum's reaction in (I think) a RadioLab episode. The cool aspect about Eliza to me, which they explored in the episode, is the ability for people to treat themselves, to an extent, by having their own words replayed to them, but from an external agent.
