Does the mind’s eye have a refresh rate?

okay this is FULLY a shitpost, but the thing that inspired this was me wondering last night, do we *actually* imagine full motion when we envision something moving? or do we rather "see" still images that our mind knows to interpolate motion between?

it might seem straightforwardly obvious that you're imagining moving objects when you think about them, but when I REALLY tried to think about it, i realized that maybe this isn't as straightforward as I thought!

@est I have had the same thought. Like, I think it's basically continuous, in that you're receiving photons continuously, but I'm not sure about how that breaks down into saccades and whether your brain has to interpolate all the time. it's different when you're tracking moving objects... been too long since I first studied this stuff
