if we have networked sensing infrastructure and #5G, why not turn that into a control infrastructure? #AutonomousVehicles are hard-we've been working on them for nearly half a century (more of you count some autonomous wheeled robots not made for passengers) and we still aren't there.

controlling vehicles, fitted with relatively simple sensors to verify prespecified dimensions, on a separate lane, with a place map-seems way easier than AVs. that's stuff we pretty much have now and the control logic is relatively simple and easier to manage congestion since it allows for more global control.

They still expect to use AVs, but to give them an 'easy mode'. Maybe this is a sunk costs thing, since I see existing AV players are involved. Better to ditch autonomy and settle for managed roads.

best change from #weightlifting for me is mental. it changes my orientation to the world from being pushed around by it to moving it around me. though the physical aspects of that are minuscule, that thought pattern has made me more intentional in my life overall.

@mastsec not entirely. not with just that excerpt, anyway. It seems to me more difficult to make appropriate carve-outs for hobbyists given that casual side-projects can easily land in production software. like, at what point would Git have become subject to regulation? Is it based on # of users? There are pieces of software with very few direct users that, nonetheless, are hugely important.

I've seen the Jargon File is much maligned among some folks, but I've yet to understand why (because they never explain). For me, it was one of the things that showed me that this "computer stuff" was also something that could connect me with people because there was a culture around it.

@ghost_bird @ifixcoinops Silicon valley does have its roots in engineering though, and the best engineering builds for the long term.
(little comment on the emotional work part. though i can point to Fred Brooks and The Mythical Man-month and the cost of scaling communication, that's also a book that's routinely ignored)

@elyian I get that "value" is about the decisions people make. I'm saying assigning value equivalent to hundreds or even thousands of dollars to a "cryptokitty" is dumb. There's nothing useful about these things except that people are willing to trade them for actual money.
(I wouldn't be surprised if some portion of these things turn out to be stand-ins for the transfer of illicit goods.)
