The Expanse, inane commentary, and maybe spoilers

Interesting that Holden isn't responsible for logging the distress call from the Scopuli in the book. It's a small change in terms of plot, but that act, in the TV series, sets up the character as a do-gooder for the entire run. Besides, it gives him a much more active role in launching the whole story; through the forgiveness of the (surviving) crew-mates, it makes the bond they share much deeper right from the start; and, it establishes a sort of justification for Jim to be the leader beyond that he had that role in their old command structure since the audience can sympathize with him feeling responsible for "getting them into that mess", at least until we've seen more of him properly leading.

Honestly, I was expecting that mostly the book would compare favorably to the TV series since that's usually my experience (won't get into the reasons for that), but I really like this change vs what's in the book. I wonder how much of that is due to Franck and Abraham being writers and executive producers for the series. Either way, I think this reading will be more enjoyable than I hoped if I get to dig into changes like the above. (For instance, it looks like Mars and Earth may be somewhat less hostile at the start of the book since there's a joint military force mentioned, so I'll be interested to see if that's just for pacing, or if it bears more on key plot points.)

I'll continue to make some commentary on the book(s) as I read... unless I forget or get too busy.

@niconiconi what do you use for verification? the most I ever used was this package where you had to annotate all your function signatures, but it still threw up a bunch of false positives anyway. is yours usable by someone without much training?

Someone added a bunch of random overflow & underflow checks to my code while changing something else. I think it's just a habit and all of these extra range checks are completely unnecessary - they're already checked elsewhere...

To make a point in the argument, I put the code into CBMC, removed those checks, and started a formal verification run.

The verification failed... 🤡
with a counterexample... 🤡

a bit better a little ways in (I really need to make a proper meal though...)

also, IDK what I was thinking with the matcha powder I put in there -- I'd have needed probably 3 times as much to get real color.

@lauraritchie wouldn't clipping the socks together make tips of them remain a bit damp compared to hanging them on the line?

you probably learned this in school, but if there is something time consuming to read, and it feels a bit overwhelming, but you have the time, read as much as you can while still comprehending the material (note-taking and asking yourself questions about the material as you go helps with gauging that), and make note of how much you read and over what time period. try to read as much as that the next day: if you go over, that's good, as long as you're still understanding and remembering what you read, but just hitting the target is the goal. keep going day by day and you'll get to the end before you know it

Allieway Audio has new videos on YouTube:
explains the delay between uploads: youtube.com/watch?v=4s3iMWmxCp

I don't remember how, but I came across the videos on the channel ...three years ago maybe? it could have been later. anyway, for whatever reason, the videos stood out both for the aesthetic of ORCA (reminds me a bit of Conway's GoL) and Allie's method of presentation. I still haven't gotten into synths in they way I've wanted to, but these videos are definitely one of the reasons I've remained interested.

I switched over to AntennaPod a few months ago and I've been very happy with it. I've even got my first PR started!

@cirnog hmm. maybe I'm being ignorant, but it doesn't sound like the proof is needed for that. If so, what good is the proof? is it purely an existence proof or does it also give error bounds or something? maybe there's a paper on it I should just look up... @jmw150

@cirnog heard about that, I think ( m.youtube.com/watch?v=MiGx8xv6 at 2:10). they are aligning the mirror though, so what does it mean that there's no construction? just that they wouldn't necessarily find the solution in some cases, but still know there is one? @jmw150
