@TatianaIlyina populations keep growing and, as suggested in the article, renewables aren't set up to scale. this barely seems like news

@lucifargundam are you talking to me? I'm always only speaking for myself...

@izaya @cinebox if it's obvious where you're based (i.e., it's in your profile) it doesn't seem like a problem

@readsteven I'm confused: you're saying there are "cyberdecks" in the stories in these books?

Hey there. I am a PhD student exploring how galaxies are connected with the large-scale structure of the universe and what that reveals about dark energy. I enjoy figuring out how to condense information- whether it be for galaxy statics, outreach, or decorating science bakes

#ArtAdventCalendar - Day 17. I have two very different styles of painting and one of them is in circles. I use different sizes and shades of colour to give an illusion of shape and depth. I also use negative space as part of the shape definition. This artwork of a ringed gas giant is painted in acrylics on stretched canvas. #sciart #planets #painter #artist #astronomy

Merry Christmas!! I made this gingerbread house completely from scratch!

[en] noidea.dog/glue 48% of the time, women in developer teams are being expected to do the social "glue work", says Tanya. "Managed deliberately, glue work demonstrates and builds strong technical leadership skills. Left unconscious, it can be career limiting. It can push people into less technical roles and even out of the industry." Wonderful read which describes what I've personally experienced in different places myself, in the past.

@ulrike I definitely know who those people have been on my teams. when I think of people that I'd like to work with again, they're always top of the list because I could see how critical their work was.

I expected the first thing the author would talk about is changing the role itself rather than the engineer moving to a different role, etc. Leadership and management is baked into the criteria for advancement at my company, so you can be a software engineer who also manages people and that's valued. Maybe--and really I am just guessing--it's because we're an actual engineering organization and not a "tech company"? There are so many engineering roles just on one project that privileging "writing code" or even drawing up designs on its own for promotion seems bizarre. It's all about meeting customer needs and minimizing costs.

(side note: when did "IC" become an abbreviation we're expected to just know what you mean?)

#Browsers, time to bring back the RSS/Atom feed icon displayed when a website has an RSS/Atom feed. :rss:

It's long past-due!

@josemanuel it's not my "reasoning"--that makes it sound like far more consideration than I bothered to put in--but it's a reason. it's easy enough to post a link to a post and it displays in any client already

@techladylaura this Libby thing needs to phone home to collect? seems like it would use your clock or at least charge you a fine or something for overdue returns when you do finally return them

i think I've realized i don't like difficult video games that rely on reflex and timing. it's *just* frustrating. gives me a very "too old for this shit" feeling

@josemanuel i don't like QT's because they don't show up in Tusky. Seems like they did before or something, like "QT: <link-to-thread>", but for your toots, it just looks like you forgot to add a link or something
