@wookiecat cheers for making positive decisions for your mental health 🖖
any #retrocomputing folks that would have an interest in this? my father's getting rid of some of his books from college. i understand there may be more.
@readsteven well, it wasn't a course, but a unit. and it was in a systems course for a CS degree, but I hear it is more common to require it
@mycelium you too?
In its current implementation, #Mastodon (and the #Fediverse in general, though maybe not #Hubzilla?) scales quite poorly as the number N of instances grows:
- connections accross servers grow as N^2
- a post must be sent ~N times for popular accounts
- federated data is cached on all servers that received it
Are there current issues/PRs about these problems, what leads are considered to tackle them?
I only found two issues about data duplication/the use of IPFS (see below)

for a while I haven't understood the criticism leveled against "wokeness". I always understood "being woke" as being aware of the effects of social and political action on one's own life and the community. I also understand it as being a product of black political culture, so I always read the reaction against it as being essentially racist fear of black political power
the linked article explains a bit more the (typically unexamined) distaste for "wokeness" as essentially performative which I've heard from more liberal folks, but I'm still scratching my head about how it's put in opposition to, say, QAnon, like these things have anything to do with one another or exist on a spectrum.

I keep seeing people say Mastodon is nothing like Twitter. And they’re right.
Mastodon is an echo of the old internet, it’s decentralised, chaotic. What you get depends on your sysadmin. You can’t search, everything has to be shared to you by a human. Networks split apart and rejoin. What you see is your unique connection to it.
Is this good? Maybe. But for me that’s the internet I grew up with. No algorithms, no targeted adverts, just human interaction, and it was glorious.
@Shillywakes still not really following. anyway, I assume you mean specifically hashtags in the fediverse. that's not really going to lead to cohesive discussion because of the decentralized nature of the fediverse. I don't know what kind of #activitypub object, but in Mastodon, I think you're better served by just linking to a toot from your publication page or maybe creating an account specific to the topic, depending on how expansive your engagement with it is as the author
@Shillywakes I don't understand your point about being "descended upon": how and in what context?
@trinsec 🤔 maybe. to be honest, I'm realizing I haven't specifically checked for that before. Just figured you only have the option to cancel service and subscription during the trial period.
I just canceled an Amazon Prime Video channel, and they do have the option to turn-off auto-renewal during the normal subscription, but I'm not sure they wouldn't continue service and still bill you just without charging your card, though that seems rather sneaky.
