Moths, with images. #MothingMonday #3
This is a Garden Tiger moth (Arctia caja). Once rare in the UK, it made a bit of a comeback, but is now in decline. Night flying, so many people haven't seen one. Moths that tend to rest with their wings open like this, are often docile and readily handleable. Wingspan 50-78mm

#OnThisDay, 28 Nov 1967, PhD student Jocelyn Bell Burnell discovers the existence of pulsars.
Not included in the 1974 Nobel prize for the discovery, Bell received a £3m prize for her work in 2018. She's using it to set up a foundation to improve diversity in STEM.
Hello !
I'm a PhD student in acoustics, just starting my second year,
I'm mostly interested in nonlinear dynamics and vibrations, chaos among other stuff.
I joined this instance for the LaTeX integration (very neat btw) and to do an advent calendar of the cool figures I plot.
I am also a huge music lover and an avid fantistic litterature reader, just a nerd in general,
Glad to meet you all !
@trinsec I see. my problem isn't that I scroll past, but that I'm not even looking at my feed when the post comes up.
@trinsec also, I don't know what you mean by Sylus
@trinsec yes, but what you're suggesting wouldn't do what I want anyway. too much effort for the wrong thing=too hard
@trinsec IDK. sounds hard
@trinsec no. that's all of their posts. at least it's supposed to be--i think I've missed some before or they came really late.
what I was thinking is they can use a hashtag maybe to highlight the posts. alternatively, if they could post to a group that's specifically for that thing, then I could get notifications for that, but it has less of the specificity of (account & hashtag)
As I'm following more mastodon accounts, I find I want to enable notifications for certain accounts, but only for certain posts. Some that I follow do semi-regular guessing games or the like that I always miss until after they've already followed up with the answer, so I don't get to join in the fun.

Under exceptionnal conditions, one can see a primary and secondaries #rainbows, separated by Alexander's dark band (nothing to do with me).
This #APOD #photography is a supernumerary #rainbow. No dark band in between the rainbows. The extra rainbows in this #picture are not due to #refraction but instead #interference. Same as looking to a compact disk.

I'd like to read a book about generative art... any recommendations? If that is too broad of a request, maybe biology centric? (And python would be nice but not required.)

@tuckerteague "likes" can mean different things to different people. honestly, I'm not even sure why I "like" things sometimes, but it varies
