it would help a bit if English spelled the past tense of "read" as "red".
"i read it now. i red it earlier."
i know "red" is taken by the adjective for the colour, but nobody will be confused, since that's in a different position in the sentence.
there is more confusion from "read" and "read" being spelled identically and being in the same position in the sentence.
