It's a big part of why I left management. Juggling the conflicting priorities is exhausting. It's probably easier - and explains a lot - when you can de-humanize your co-workers by calling them "reports" or "assets" - but that's not me.
@Biggles today it was walking past striking WGA/SAG-AFTRA folks on my way to an AWS symposium with mostly execs in it and it felt weird
That's good. It means your concience works. We need more management where that hasn't atrophied.
@Biggles 100% opposed to that language and the mindset it enables/reveals - any people on my team are my responsibility to care for, first and foremost
Then layoff day is going to suck extra bad for you - as it did for me they day I had to fire people I'd spent months or years working with, all through no fault of their own.
And - layoff day always comes. Find one single company not a few months old startup that hasn't. In the US that is - other countries are more enlightened.
@darkuncle
It's kind of sick when you stand back and say it out loud. Those aren't "reports" or "assets" - they're people. The "Personnel" department is now "Human Resources". We don't fire people - we have a "reduction in force" or "layoffs". All so we can feel better about treating them like animals or worse. It's tragic, really.
