Seriously considering a Framework laptop after not having anything but Macs for at least 15 years. The idea of running OpenBSD on the desktop again (with dual boot Linux for game support) and pluggable hardware like this is really attractive: fosstodon.org/@frameworkcomput

Pros and cons. I always said pick the software you want to run, *then* choose the OS that supports it. I wonder how well OpenBSD will support things like wifi and sound...

@Biggles extremely well, judging by the track record. (Plus Framework will pick hardware that’s open and well-supported by Linux, which means BSD support is a given.)

I wish I shared your optimism. The desktop experience isn't a priority on the linux side; maybe bsd is better? I say go for it, I'd love to be shown wrong, and even if there's issues multi-boot should fix it quickly enough.

@Biggles I have many fond memories of Enlightenment and all the CLI work I used to do, but I fear that when I go back to a UN*X desktop, the nature of work I do will have changed so much that the experience won’t be the same =\

@darkuncle honestly - should be better in many ways. More stuff lives in a browser window. I mean - look at your mac desktop *right now* and - how much of what you use daily is a native app? As opposed to a web page in electron, or an actual browser? Right now, i am running 2 browsers, notes, multiple terminal windows, and 1password.

@Biggles and almost all of that list that isn’t a browser, could run in a browser. Good points.
